looked down though from the castle's top floor where they could make a better guess at the outline in the forest where Leechtown had been. They stared silently and each imagined what had happened, who had lived there and the wild west goings-on in a short-lived frontier community, with brave and desperate people from around the world. They made camp on the upper floor planking and lay down together again under the open sky as it turned dark pink and then they were asleep.

Conn woke up astonished to see, straight overhead, thousands of bright stars still mixing with a fading dream bear. He didn’t remember where he was – and then slowly realized, and he tried to stop the process because it was like he was inside the stars. Looking into the vast, endless space, he suddenly felt infinitely small, and cut adrift. It was a cosmic terror that was new to him, like one of his nightmares but clearer and much worse. But then it was replaced by another, wonderful feeling: that he was also infinitely huge, he was connected to absolutely everything including those stars.

He looked beside him and realized that Ursula was also staring upwards, with Shady fast asleep on her other side. She reached out and took hold of his hand.
